Carbon fiber sheet thickness specifications, primary applications, and processing considerations

Carbon fiber sheets are available in various thicknesses to suit different applications. Thinner sheets are easier to bend without fatigue, while thicker sheets are extremely rigid and difficult to bend, making them suitable for applications requiring strength and rigidity.

 

The thickness of carbon fiber sheets can vary slightly between manufacturers, and custom thicknesses may also be available. However, typical thicknesses include: - 0.013 inches (0.33 mm): Extremely thin and easily cut with household scissors. This thickness is often used for decorative purposes. - 0.020 inches (0.50 mm): Thicker than 0.013-inch sheets and can be cut with heavy-duty scissors. They are less flexible but provide some camouflage for minor imperfections when used to cover substrates.

Please take note of the following information about carbon fiber sheets: 0.032" (0.80mm): This carbon fiber sheet is fairly rigid with some flexibility and is about as thick as an audio CD. It can be bent around a 10-12 inch diameter cylinder. It is commonly used as a semi-rigid single sheet or lightweight structural material. It can be cut using tin snips, saws, razors, or grinding wheels. For a smooth edge, sand the cut edges with 220-grit sandpaper. 0.062" (1.6mm): This thicker carbon fiber sheet is fairly rigid and suitable for projects requiring impact resistance or small structural applications. It is only slightly flexible and can be bent around a cylinder with a diameter of about 24 inches. When cutting, use carbide routers, CNC drills, or grinding wheels. 0.125" (3.175mm): This ⅛-inch thick carbon fiber sheet is extremely durable and strong, making it ideal for structural applications. When cutting, use a saw, carbide, bi-metal, or diamond-coated cutter, and sand the edges for a smooth finish.

 

When cutting carbon fiber sheets, it's important to use the right cutting tools for each thickness. Avoid using a jig saw or circular saw for fast cutting, as this will create a lot of carbon fiber dust, which can be harmful to the eyes and lungs. Even fast cuts can leave rough edges, so it's best to protect the surface from scratches with tape or something similar. When cutting carbon fiber sheets, always wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including goggles, long sleeves, masks, and gloves.
